Touching down at Cardiff with your group
Cardiff Airport is out at Rhoose, 13 miles or so west of the city in the Vale of Glamorgan, so the ride in is a proper part of your arrival. Here's how pickups work, whether you've booked a minibus or a coach.
Big coaches need permission first
Before a coach carrying 40 or more people turns up, the airport has to give its say-so. Once it has, the coach may pull into the drop-off zone outside the terminal and stay briefly. Otherwise it heads to Long Stay, where the first 20 minutes cost nothing and normal parking rates apply after that.

Smaller minibuses
For a smaller minibus, the everyday drop-off and pick-up options are the ones to know. You reach them from the east, along Port Road. The zone right outside charges in 10-minute chunks and nobody may leave a vehicle unattended there; over in Car Park 2, a pick-up area gives you 20 minutes before any charge starts.
Stopping on the approach roads isn't allowed, so there's no quick roadside pickup. Your confirmation will name the meeting point.

Good to know at Cardiff Airport
- Picking up or dropping off on the approach roads is not allowed.
- The drop-off zone is charged in 10-minute blocks and vehicles must not be left unattended; Car Park 2 has a drop-off and pick-up area free for the first 20 minutes.
- The drop-off and pick-up area is reached from the eastern approach (Port Road).
- The airport is near Rhoose in the Vale of Glamorgan, about 13 miles west of Cardiff; from junction 33 of the M4 follow the A4232, A4050 and A4226.
Into Cardiff and around Wales
The drive to Cardiff Castle covers 12 or 13 miles and takes about 25 minutes when the roads are quiet; from junction 33 of the M4 it follows the A4232, A4050 and A4226. Cardiff has no charging Clean Air Zone. Wales changed its default speed limit on built-up roads to 20 mph in 2023, and some roads are returning to 30, so journeys can feel slower than you expect.
From the city, Castell Coch is about 7 miles, Caerphilly Castle about 8 and Brecon about 40, all lovely outings for a group.
Your questions
We're coming for a rugby weekend. Anything to know?
When there's a big match at the Principality Stadium, the roads around it are shut for much of the day. Special parking for coaches and minibuses is laid on at sites such as the Civic Centre and Lloyd George Avenue, and you can book it ahead.
We're 45 guests flying in for a wedding. What changes?
A coach of that size needs the airport's authorisation before it arrives. Send the flight details early so the operator can arrange it, and have everyone ready to board as soon as it pulls in.
Can the driver wait for us at the terminal door?
Not for long. The drop-off zone is charged by the 10 minutes and vehicles can't be left unattended, so the driver times arrival to your flight.
Is Bristol Airport an alternative?
It can be. Bristol is about 45 miles from Cardiff, around an hour, and the Severn crossings have been toll-free since 2018.
