Coach and Minibus Hire in the United Kingdom

Sheffield by Minibus, with the Peak District Next Door

Sheffield runs right up to the edge of the Peak District, so your group can spend the morning among steelworks and galleries and the afternoon wandering round Bakewell. A minibus with a driver means nobody has to navigate or stay sober for the drive home.

The Clean Air Zone, in plain terms

The city centre, inside and including the Inner Ring Road, is a charging Clean Air Zone, watched by number-plate cameras at all hours. Private cars aren't charged, but a hired minibus is unless it meets Euro 6 for diesel or Euro 4 for petrol, and coaches need Euro VI.

It's worth confirming the standard when you book. If a vehicle does fall short, the daily charge can be paid in a window running from six days before the trip to six days after. A school that has contracted a minibus for an educational outing can apply ahead for a local exemption. So can community transport groups, and adapted vehicles with at least ten seats that are used by disabled passengers.

Picking a meeting point

The station approach is not the place to gather. Traffic there now follows a one-way loop using Fornham Street and Cross Turner Street. The kerb beside the entrance is kept for hackney carriages, and a stop on Cross Turner Street has to be over in moments. You'll have a calmer start outside a nearby hotel or on a quieter side street, agreed with the driver the day before.

  • Sheffield Botanical Gardens — Victorian gardens and glass pavilions off Clarkehouse Road
  • Millennium Gallery and Winter Garden — Gallery and large urban glasshouse beside each other in the city centre

Where groups usually stay

  • Ecclesall Road and the south-west suburbs
  • Meadowhall / M1 junction 34 (near the arena)
  • Kelham Island and the university quarter
  • City centre (station / Sheaf Street, St Paul's and Leopold Square)

Into the Peak for the day

Chatsworth is about 35 minutes away and welcomes groups who book ahead: parking is free for pre-booked minibuses and coaches, and while you explore the house and garden your driver is looked after with a voucher for refreshments and somewhere to rest. Castleton and the Hope Valley are about 45 minutes out, and Bakewell a little closer.

For a rainy day, Magna Science Adventure Centre sits in an old steelworks at Templeborough, about a quarter of an hour from the centre.

Snooker, hockey and football weekends

The Crucible hosts the World Snooker Championship each spring, and the Sheffield Steelers play ice hockey at the Utilita Arena near Meadowhall. With Bramall Lane and Hillsborough too, a minibus is an easy way for a visiting supporters' club or team to get in and out. Hotels by the arena or at Meadowhall keep the late ride back short.

Your questions

Which airport should we fly into for Sheffield?

Each of the three is roughly 45 miles off. East Midlands tends to be quickest: around 50 minutes, mostly down the M1. Allow an hour for Leeds Bradford, and a bit longer again for Manchester, where the road climbs over the Pennines.

Can we do Chatsworth and Bakewell in one day?

Yes, comfortably. They're close to each other in the Peak District, so a relaxed morning at the house and a late lunch in Bakewell works well. Book the Chatsworth visit as a group so the vehicle parks free.

Is York too far for a day out from Sheffield?

Not at all. It's about 55 miles up the road, around 1.25 hours, so you'll still have most of the day for the Minster and the Shambles.
