Coach and Minibus Hire in the United Kingdom

Landing at Newcastle with your group

Newcastle's airport rules turn on two numbers: 22 seats and 24 hours. Coaches of that size reach the terminal front only with access booked a day ahead, while smaller vehicles have their own arrangements.

Coaches on the terminal front

A coach with 22 or more seats, counting the driver's, can set down and pick up on the terminal front road, but only if access was booked at least 24 hours in advance. Cameras read the number plate, and a vehicle without permission simply can't get in.

Those bookings are fixed and generally non-refundable. If your flight changes, let the operator know straight away so they can work out what's possible.

Minibuses, and where drivers wait

There's separate paid parking for minibuses and vans, with a height limit of 2.9 metres. The whole airport road network is a red route, so there's no pulling in by the kerb for a quick pickup. For a family or a team of a dozen, the minibus parking is simply where you'll be collected.

While your plane taxis in, a driver can park free of charge at Callerton Parkway's Airport Waiting Zone for as long as 90 minutes. A message from arrivals then brings the vehicle round.

The terminals

  • Single passenger terminal

Good to know at Newcastle International Airport

  • The A1 followed by the A696 leads directly to the terminal front; the Metro links the airport with Newcastle city centre in about 25 minutes.
  • Red Route zones cover the airport's road network and surrounding roads to prevent stopping and dangerous parking.
  • Minibuses and vans have their own charged parking, with a 2.9 m height limit.
  • Coach access bookings are non-flexible and generally non-refundable.

The city, the coast and the castles

Grey's Monument is about 10 miles off along the A696, half an hour or so outside rush hour. A Clean Air Zone run jointly by Newcastle and Gateshead takes in most of the centre plus the Tyne bridges; older minibuses below the Euro 6 diesel or Euro 4 petrol standard pay a daily charge there, while private cars don't.

Northumberland is on the doorstep. From the city, Alnwick Castle is about 35 miles, Bamburgh about 50, and Durham's cathedral and castle about 18.

Your questions

We're a club of 25. Does the 24-hour rule affect us?

If you're travelling by coach, yes: access to the terminal front has to be booked at least a day before. Book your transport early and it's taken care of.

Where do we meet a minibus rather than a coach?

A minibus collects from its own paid car park, not the terminal front road. Your confirmation will say where the driver is waiting, so follow that rather than heading out to the front with the coach groups.

Can one or two of us take the train instead?

The Metro links the airport with the city centre in about 25 minutes, which suits anyone travelling light who wants to go ahead.

Could we visit Holy Island on the way north?

Yes, but the causeway is tidal. The county council publishes daily safe crossing times, which can change with the weather, and advises allowing an extra 30 minutes.
