Coach and Minibus Hire in the United Kingdom

Arriving at Manchester Airport with family or friends

Manchester is now a two-terminal airport, and where you meet your vehicle depends on both the terminal and what you've booked. Here's how it works for a party landing at Terminal 2 or Terminal 3.

If you've booked a minibus

Minibuses of up to 16 seats collect from the over-height parking facilities at Terminals 2 and 3. That suits exactly the kind of party a minibus is made for: a wedding party with suit carriers, a five-a-side squad, or grandparents, cousins and a pile of cases.

If your paperwork or an old message mentions Terminal 1, ignore it. That terminal has closed, and every flight now uses 2 or 3.

If a coach is collecting you

Collecting from Terminal 2, a coach uses the yellow bus stops along Palma Avenue; the barrier-controlled lanes are off limits. Terminal 3's coaches go to bus stop C, where only two big vehicles fit at once, and getting there means a permit for the controlled lane.

There's no published spot for a coach to wait, and collecting passengers anywhere else on the airport roads is banned and enforced. That makes timing everything, so a message from the baggage hall is the most useful thing you can send.

Good to know at Manchester Airport

  • Blue Badge holders may use the drop-off forecourts free of charge for drop-off only, after showing their badge to a traffic marshal.
  • The terminal drop-off zones are barrierless and camera-controlled; the charge is paid online by midnight the following day, and a free drop-off area is linked to the terminals by a shuttle bus that runs around the clock.
  • Minibuses of up to 16 seats pick up from the over-height parking facilities at Terminals 2 and 3.
  • Terminal 1 has closed: as of March 2026 Manchester is a two-terminal airport (Terminals 2 and 3).

Where you'll be heading

Albert Square is about 9 miles away, around 20 minutes in light traffic. Greater Manchester has decided against a charging Clean Air Zone, so nothing extra is due for driving into the city. Plenty of groups go straight out instead: the Lake District at Windermere is about 85 miles from the city, and Castleton in the Peak District about 30.

Your questions

Can the driver pull up right outside arrivals and wait?

No. Picking up on the airport road system is prohibited, and there's no published coach layover. Minibuses meet you at the over-height parking and coaches at their set stops.

Is there a free place to be dropped off?

Yes. There's a free drop-off area with a shuttle bus to the terminals, while the forecourt zones are camera-controlled and charged by midnight the following day.

One of us has a Blue Badge. Does that help?

For drop-off, yes: Blue Badge holders can use the forecourts free of charge once they've shown the badge to one of the traffic marshals. It covers drop-off only, not pickups.

Can we go straight to the Lake District from the airport?

Certainly. It's a long first day after a flight, so build in a lunch stop and tell us your hotel's arrival time.
