York Minibus Hire for Walls, Races and the Moors
York's rules for group vehicles are strict, and they're there to protect the medieval centre. Once you know them, a day by minibus here is a real pleasure.
The rule inside the walls
Nothing with more than 16 seats, coach or minibus, is allowed inside the city walls. A smaller minibus isn't caught by that rule, so if your group is small, ask how close to your hotel the driver can get. Coaches are barred from Lendal Bridge and Ouse Bridge too, and cross the river at Skeldergate Bridge instead.

Rendezvous points and coach parks
In the centre, larger vehicles set down and collect in just five places, the pair of coach parks plus three rendezvous points: Foss Bank for the Minster, Fawcett Street for Clifford's Tower and JORVIK, and Leeman Road for the National Railway Museum. Stopping at the station's bus stops isn't allowed for any reason.
Union Terrace coach park has toilets and opens for coaches from morning until late evening. St George's Field is open 24 hours with overnight parking, though it sits low beside the river and shuts when flood levels rise. Groups with special needs can ask the council for a permit, at least a week ahead.
Flying into York
Places your group will want to see
- Castle Howard — Stately home about 15 miles north-east; free designated coach parking for booked groups, and coaches should approach via Malton to avoid narrow arches
- York Christmas Market (St Nicholas Fair) — Parliament Street and St Sampson's Square, Thursday 12 November to Monday 21 December 2026 (closed Tuesdays)
- JORVIK Viking Centre and Clifford's Tower — Near the Fawcett Street "Castle Rendezvous" set-down
- National Railway Museum — Beside the station; set down at the Leeman Road "Railway Rendezvous"
- The Shambles and the city walls — Medieval streets inside the walls, which coaches may not enter
- York Minster — Gothic cathedral; the Foss Bank "Minster Rendezvous" is the nearest coach set-down
Where groups usually stay
- Outer ring road / A64 (easier coach access)
- Fulford and Bishopthorpe Road (near the racecourse)
- Clifton and Bootham (north)
- Station and Leeman Road
- Inside the city walls (Minster / Bootham)
A day at the races
York Racecourse hosts the Dante Festival in May and the Ebor Festival each August. Minibuses and coaches are directed to Coach Park C, which lies off Bishopthorpe Road just south of Terry's, coming in from the A64 through Bishopthorpe village. Stopping on the nearby roads, or outside Terry's itself, isn't permitted.
Out into Yorkshire
Castle Howard is about 30 minutes away; booked groups get free coach parking, and drivers approach via Malton to avoid narrow arches. Harrogate and Knaresborough suit a gentle afternoon, Fountains Abbey is under an hour, and Whitby across the North York Moors makes a grand day out.
Your questions
Does York have a Christmas market coach plan?
The St Nicholas Fair fills Parliament Street and St Sampson's Square each year in the weeks before Christmas, and York's council tends to post that season's coach plan in October, so wait for it before settling on drop-off times.
Which airport is nearest to York?
Leeds Bradford, about 30 miles west, which is roughly a 50-minute drive. There's no official place published there for collecting groups, so your driver will confirm where to meet. Manchester is about 1 h 45 min.
Can we visit Whitby and Scarborough on the same day?
It's possible but long. Each is more than an hour from York, so most groups choose one and enjoy it properly.
